Wasn’t just driving through. Planned on spending a day at Bonneville, but it was shut down to film Independence Day. Camped overnight at an OHV campground instead, then visited Ken Block’s shop before driving to Dinosaur and spending the night there. Explored Dinosaur the next day before finally leaving the state.

I lived in Upstate New York for 15 years, it is much larger than you seem to think.

Wikipedia agrees with me, and you’ll note that while they acknowledge that the definition is disputed, precisely none of the definitions are anything close to what you propose. You are just mislabelling the North Country as all of Upstate, when it is just a small part of it.

Yes, that’s because Buffalo doesn’t exist in Upstate New York, it’s in Western New York.

If 95% of the landmass is “Upstate” than it is no longer “Upstate” but merely just the rest of the fucking state.

Population density doesn’t change geographical location. Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, etc are in no way shape or form in Upstate New York and no one who lives there would say that either.

NYC is indisputably the political, financial, economic and population center of the State. That doesn’t make it the geographical center of the state though.

Exactly. Upstate vs. Downstate is just the difference between NYC metro area and the rest of the state. There’s nothing more to it. That makes Upstate a not so useful descriptor which is why we use more precise subregion names. It does not however mean that a place can’t be in BOTH Upstate and Western New York.

You are correct, but technically “upstate” is defined as anything beyond (that’s north or west) of Rockland and Westchester counties (the bottom two light blue counties on the map above). It’s typically defined as anything past the Tappan Zee Bridge, because NYC is defined by it’s bridges and the Tappan Zee is one damn fine bridge.
